RECYCLING INFO
In 2005, used or unwanted electronics amounted to approximately 1.9 to 2.2 million tons. Of that, about 1.5 to 1.9 million tons were primarily discarded in landfills, and only 345,000 to 379,000 tons were recycled. By 2007, more than 280 million personal computers will become obsolete. Increasing technological change and decreasing chip costs are spurring the development of new products and driving the obsolescence rates of older electronics. This is evidenced by the average lifespan of PCs, which is falling from 4.5 years in 1992 to an estimated 2 years in 2005.

Is Reuse better than Recycling?
"Because so much of the energy used over the life cycle of a computer is in manufacturing high-tech components, which are usually destryed in recycling processes to recover raw materials, the energy savings potential of reselling or upgrading is some 5-20 times greater than recycling."

- excerpt from study completed by United Nations University professors Eric Williams and Ruediger Kuehr
